1 HOW TO BECOME A SELLER

It is now free to start your auction-style listing at 99p and keep in mind that the lower you start the bidding, the more likely you are to sell your item.

The next step is to decide the duration of your listing. You can list items for up to 10 days.

Many sellers list their items for seven days, in order to include a weekend to capture weekend shoppers as Sunday evenings are the busiest for shoppers.

5 CREATE A LISTING

To maximise the number of potential bidders, write a descriptive title using all relevant keywords to describe your item. Imagine you are the buyer – what information would they type in to find your listing?

Your description needs to provide buyers with all the information they need on details like brand, age and condition.

Honesty is definitely the best policy here as if you withhold information or falsely advertise, you may run into major problems later.

6 TAKE A PICTURE

A picture really does paint a thousand words, so always include a clear, digital photo of your item. Buyers like to see what they are getting, and the better quality photo, the more likely you are to make a sale. Make sure it displays all the features and highlights any flaws.

The easiest way to do this is to use a digital camera. However, if you have a traditional camera, use a scanner to save them in a digital format. Alternatively, most photo processing services now offer this service. You can save these pictures on your computer, naming them clearly so you can locate them later when you start to list.

7 CHOOSE HOW YOU WANT TO GET PAID

Before you make a listing, you must choose how you would like to accept payment, for example cheque, credit card, money order. Buyers want a safe and easy way to pay so consider accepting an online payment system such as PayPal.

PayPal is a secure online payment method, which allows you to pay or get paid quickly and easily without sharing any of your financial information.

Sellers pay up to 3.4pc plus 20p per transaction, so the cost is minimal and the more you sell, the more you can save.

8 REMEMBER TO ADD POSTAGE

It is worth buying a set of scales, so you can price packaging costs accurately. The post office website has a dedicated section for eBay users which gives postal prices and sells packaging.

If you are willing to ship internationally, make sure you include all of the relevant international postage costs.

Be fair with your postage and packing prices and do not try to make money on them – this could cost you a sale.

9 COMPLETING THE SALE

To keep track of your items on sale, use the online tool “My eBay”. This is especially useful if you have more than one item for sale or if you are selling and bidding on several items.

Once the listing ends, it is time to contact the buyer to arrange payment and get delivery details.

But remember, only post the item once you have received payment.

Once the sale is complete, leave feedback for your buyer and encourage them to do the same for you.

10 DON’T GIVE UP

WHO IS CHITIKA?

The sexy sounding name Chitika (pronounced CHIH-tih-ka) has nothing to do with bananas. Chitika was created by Venkat Kolluri (formerly of Upromise) and Alden DoRosario (formerly with Terra Lycos). If you’re a WordPress.com user you probably already know about how the service automatically sends your posts toPing-o-Matic! to help promote them for you.

Today the Publicize feature gets a major addition: the ability to send your posts to Twitter. You can go with the default tweet or customize the message, and override the automatic settings on a per post basis as well.

To enable the new feature, head over to your Dashboard: My Blogs admin page. In the Publicize column, check off the Twitter column for each of the blogs you’d like to enable to auto-tweet. You’ll be asked to authenticate each blog via OAuth, after which you’ll see a “Publicize” section at the bottom of the Publish box each time you write a new post.

To override any of the settings for an individual post, just click the Edit link in the Publicize section. You can edit the text of the tweet or turn it off altogether for that post. Note also that the connection settings are per blog and per user, so if you run a multi-author blog each individual writer will have to authenticate to their own Twitter account (or to whatever account is preferred).

WordPress.com recently introduced a feature called “Publicize”, which allows users to send their blog posts to Twitter and Yahoo as status messages. If you are a WordPress.com user, here are someinstructions, on how you can send out your posts as twitter and Yahoo updates.

Enabling Twitter & Yahoo Updates in WordPress

Step 1: Login to your WordPress.com account and click on the “My Blogs” link in the sidebar.

Step 2: In the blog listing on the right hand side, select Twitter under the Publicize column. You will be shown a message to “Authorize Twitter”, click on it and follow the steps to authorize your twitter account.

When you click the authorize link, you’ll be taken to the third party service, where you’ll need to sign in and approve the connection between your WordPress.com blog and your account.

Once you’ve approved the connection, each time you write a new post, you’ll see a “Publicize” section in the Publish box on your post writing screen.

Once you have authorized both your accounts, your posts will automatically be sent to twitter and Yahoo.

Customizing Tweet/Update Messages

WordPress.com will create a automatic status update message based on your post. However, you can edit the message and customize it. While creating a new post you will see a new Publicize message in the sidebar.

To customize your publicize message, click on the edit link. You can now customize the message that will be sent out to Yahoo and Twitter.

Disabling WordPress.com Posts From Being Sent out as Updates

There are certain times, when you may not want to send out your posts as updates. To do that, just clickon the edit link in the sidebar for Publicize, and deselect the services you do not want to send out an update to.

Many WordPress users may argue that there are several plugins that already do this. However,WordPress.com users cannot install plugins, so the Publicize feature is definitely a very good thing for automatically sending out posts as updates.
